A Guide to the Local Surf Spots

Updated: May 12, 2019

You want to try river surfing in Calgary or our in the mountains, but you’re just not sure where to start? Let us guide you to the best local surf spots!

Beginner/Intermediate River Surf Location:

10th Street Wave

The 10th Street Wave is one of the world’s best beginner surf waves. It is an amazing spot to learn the fundamentals, practice safe river habits and get accustomed to the community. This local break is located directly underneath the 10th Street Bridge in downtown Calgary.

You can find parking for the day at the Park Plus Lot #6 or 8 St SW. From there, you walk west up the pathway for 300 meters and you'll see where the surfers are set up. Unfortunately, there are no change rooms at this location: however, we recommend the use of a change poncho.

Expert River Surf Location:

Kananaskis, AB

The ‘Mountain Wave’ is located just 45 minutes outside of Calgary in Kananaskis. Before you try to surf this wave, we strongly advise that you are well versed in river surfing and that you have white water experience. This wave is dam controlled which means that the water levels will vary, so many sure you check to see if the water is running before making the trip! You can find the flow rates here.

Parking for the Kananaskis wave is located at the Barrier Lake Visitor Centre. The centre has bathrooms which can be used to change in and out of your wetsuit — We recommend changing in the bathrooms and walking down to the wave as there is limited space once you are by the river.
