Wetsuit Type: Men's hooded fullsuit
Thickness: Largely 5mm, with strategic 4mm panels for greater upper-body freedom
Neoprene: Channel Flex – this is Xcel's new mega-stretchy neoprene – through the upper body, with Ultra Flex through the rest of the suit. Channel Flex is a lightweight, hydrophobic, gridded material, similar to O'Neill's TechnoButter but with more of an emphasis on warmth
Lining: Celliant Black, Xcel's premium thermal lining, covers the entirety of the suit's inside, except for under the arms. Chest and back panels get the heavy-duty, leopard-print stuff, which contains air-trapping hollow fibres for improved heat retention; the more lightweight "jacquard" version (the red stuff) covers the rest of the suit.
Celliant Black: Celliant Black lining – both the hollow-fibre and the jacquard variety – is a "responsive" textile built around Celliant, an FDA-certified fibre that generates additional heat by converting movement into infrared energy. Every time you move, it warms your muscles by increasing bloodflow, but unlike its predecessor Thermo Dry Celliant, Celliant Black also contains heat-retaining minerals to prevent that newly generated heat from escaping. When you stop moving, you stay warmer for longer.
Entry: Chest zip. It's sealed with a silicone strip, making the zipper "semi-dry", plus there's a magnetic closure instead of the usual popper, which is a lovely touch and typical of this suit's class. "Balanced shoulder design" aids entry.
Seam Construction: FusionX tape throughout, shoring up the triple glued and blindstitched seams from the inside
Integrated Hood: Like the rest of the suit, the built-in hood is lined with Celliant Black
Also Worth Noting: Drylock wrist seals (Xcel's extremely effective donut-tapered cuffs); Nexskin ankle seals (liquid neoprene strips); smoothskin chest and back panels (wind-resistant, water-resistant); grooves at the back of the knee to aid flexion and prevent bunching; glideskin collar to minimise chafing.
Eco Credentials: Water-based glues (no nasty VOCs); dope-dyed yarns (massive savings on water and energy); scrap rubber tyres pyrolyzed into carbon black (one of the key ingredients in neoprene); limestone-derived neoprene (marginally better than petrochemcial alternatives); plastic bottles recycled into polyester yarns (used the stretch jersey fabric that lines the neoprene).
